Waters, and a former JSO officer, alleging she was improperly touched after a 2024 traffic stop in the Edgewood neighborhood. The federal lawsuit also cites more than a dozen prior misconduct allegations, arguing the sheriff's office has broader training and supervision problems that could affect community trust and police accountability in Jacksonville.
2. Video shows moment masked robber holds local smoke shop employee at knifepoint (actionnewsjax.com) — A Jacksonville smoke shop employee fought off a masked robber who held her at knifepoint Friday morning at Seaglass Smoke Shop near Firestone Road and 103rd Street. She drove him out by throwing items, then called JSO, and neighbors quickly checked on her, underscoring both the seriousness of the crime and the strong community support in that area.
3. 'We have to look at everything': Old Middleburg Road project moves forward as residents raise concerns (firstcoastnews.com) — Jacksonville's Old Middleburg Road South is set for major widening and safety upgrades on the Westside, but some neighbors worry new concrete barriers could complicate everyday access to their homes. Councilman Rahman Johnson says the city is weighing safety, cost, and design as Phase 2A construction nears and right-of-way work continues for Phase 2B, where residents are pushing for changes to preserve convenient turns.
4. St. Johns County evictions hit highest level in 7 years (jaxtoday.org) — Rising eviction filings in neighboring St. Johns County mirror a broader affordability squeeze that's also hitting Duval County, which now has the highest eviction rate in Florida. For Jacksonville-area renters and workers, the data highlight how high housing costs and long commutes are straining budgets across Northeast Florida and pushing many families to the edge of losing their homes.
5. UF Health partner Intuitive identified for Mandarin project (jaxdailyrecord.com) — A new UF Health Jacksonville freestanding emergency room, potentially the fifth in the system, is being considered for San Jose Boulevard in Mandarin, replacing a former gas station site. If approved, it would join four other hybrid ER and urgent care centers around Jacksonville, aiming to give nearby residents 24/7 emergency access while steering some patients to lower-cost urgent care in the same building.
