POLK CITY, FL -- A horse was killed Wednesday morning, April 4, when it wandered onto State Road 33 (Commonwealth Avenue) and was struck by possibly two big-rig trucks.
The crash occurred at about 4:45 a.m. in a rural area just north of Green Pond Road.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, one or both of the semi-tractor trailer trucks struck the roving horse, killing it instantly. The two semis then collided, pinning one driver in his truck and forcing the sheriff's office to close the road to traffic for several hours while rescue workers extracted him and the trucks and dead horse were cleared.
