6 Dead After Train Slams Into SUV In Florida

A train slammed into an SUV on Jim Lefler Circle from US Highway 92 just before 7 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

PLANT CITY, FL — Six people are dead, including three children, after a train slammed into an SUV on Jim Lefler Circle from US Highway 92 just before 7 p.m. Saturday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Sunday.

Jose Guadalupe Hernandez, 52, was driving his white 2020 Cadillac Escalade with his wife, three children, and two friends of the children as his passengers when he, for reasons unknown, slowly crossed the tracks and onto the train's path, officials said.

The five rear passengers—Enedelia Hernandez, 50, Jakub A. Lopez, 17, Alyssa Hernandez, 17, Anaelia Hernandez, 22, and Julian Hernandez, 9—were killed after being ejected from the SUV, according to officials.

The driver, Jose G. Hernandez, initially survived the impact but died overnight Saturday at the hospital, officials said. The front right passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"I continue to ask our community to keep this family, their loved ones, and first responders in their thoughts," Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the news release. "This tragic loss is immense, and the members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and I are praying for peace and comfort for all those impacted."
