Haines City Tow Truck Owner Accused Of Stealing Disabled Car
Lake Wales police said J & M Towing towed a car without the owner's permission and then said it would be returned if the owner paid $735.

LAKE WALES, FL — Lake Wales police are seeking other people who may have fallen victim to a tow truck scam.
On June 21, a 2010 Nissan Maxima was reported stolen to the Lake Wales police. The owner left the car parked on the shoulder of Highway 27 North in front of the Race Trac gas station at 24224 Highway 27 N, Lake Wales, due to mechanical issues.

On Sept. 12, detectives learned from the owner he had been contacted by a local tow company regarding his car. Jesus Melendez, 32, of J & M Towing, 1017 Ronlin St., Haines City, sent a letter to the car owner stating the vehicle had been towed at the gas station manager's request. However, Race Trac management confirmed they do not have vehicles towed.
The letter also told the car owner he could have his car back if he paid $735.

When detectives spoke with Melendez by telephone, he initially told the same story, but when questioned further, he stated he needed his lawyer.
On Sept. 13, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Melendez for grand theft and scheming to defraud. Melendez was taken into custody.
The Nissan was found at a storage yard operated by Melendez located at 701 Lafoley St., Haines City, where it was recovered and returned to the owner.
Lake Wales police said there is a high likelihood Melendez has done this before, and there may be more victims. If you believe you are a victim of Melendez's scheme, contact Lake Wales police Detective Matt Rhoden at 863-678-4223.
