Lakeland City Commission Votes To Relocate Confederate Statue
The Confederate monument has stood in the center of Munn Park since 1910.

LAKELAND, FL—With a split 4-3 vote, the Lakeland City Commission agreed Monday to remove
a controversial statue of a Confederate soldier from the center of Munn Park.
The decision came after a great deal of debate over whether to move the statue from
the city’s main park or keep it in place but add other monuments commemorating
individuals who contributed to Lakeland’s history around it, according to the Lakeland Ledger.
Following Monday’s vote, Commissioner Don Selvage introduced a resolution directing the
city manager to begin reviewing alternative sites for the statue so it can be relocated as quickly as possible.

The commission’s decision came after residents crowded into City Hall for three
hours of comment on whether the statue should stay or go.
The statue was erected in 1910 by the United Daughters of the Revolution.
