Suspect Dead, Deputy Injured In Dundee Shooting

A Polk County deputy shot a 21-year-old man who was struggling with another deputy.

DUNDEE, FL --A 21-year-old Dundee man has been shot to death by Polk County Sheriff’s deputies during an investigation into child pornography.

According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, undercover deputies Christine Smith, 41, and Trent Medley, 29, went to a home on 8th Street North in Dundee at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, after receiving a tip about child pornography.

Resident Andres Estrada submitted to their request to examine his cell phone. While searching the cell phone, Medley came across a pornographic image and Estrada admitted it was pornography.

Medley than walked out of the home to speak with detectives on the scene while Smith read Estrada his rights. That’s when Estrada reportedly said, “You’re not going to do this to me,” and attacked Smith.

The deputy said Estrada, who is 6 feet tall and 220 pounds, lunged from his chair and threw Smith to the floor where he proceeded to punch her in the head and attempt to grab her gun. Medley heard her scream, “Get him off of me,” and rushed back into the house.

He said he saw Estrada attacking Smith and Estrada’s brother, Claudio, 18, attempting to pull him off of her.

Medley said Estrada was reaching for Smith's gun when he fired three shots, killing Estrada.

Smith, who has worked for the Pasco Sheriff's Office since 2006, was treated and released from the hospital.

Judd said Estrada has no criminal background but has been committed to mental facilities under the state’s Baker Act three times.

Judd said the brothers were the only two family members at home at that time. Their parents were at work.

“This is a good, solid family and we are distraught for the family as well,” said Judd.

He added that the investigation is in the preliminary stages. Detectives haven’t had a chance to review all of the photos on Estrada’s cell phone and computer to determine if he was in possession of more child pornography.
