Suspect Found Sleeping In Driveway After Allegedly Shooting A Man

The Polk County Sheriff's Office found a suspect accused of shooting a man he got into an argument with sleeping in a driveway on Monday.

LAKELAND, FL — A 48-year-old man who was accused of shooting a Lakeland man was found sleeping in a driveway of a home on Monday night, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Clyde Burton Davis, Jr. faces charges of attempted murder for allegedly shooting a victim he got into an argument with on Monday afternoon.

The victim was on the ground outside the suspect's home on Edith Avenue at 2 p.m. with a gunshot wound to his chest, detectives said.

Witnesses and the victim told deputies that Davis and the victim had gotten into an argument before the shooting.

The suspect had left the home before police arrived, investigators said.

Authorities found narcotics, including meth and heroin, paraphernalia, including digital scales, baggies, syringes, a meth pipe, and a straw and shotgun shells inside the Edith Avenue home, deputies said.

Davis' 43-year-old wife, Loretta Davis, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and paraphernalia, possession of heroin, and maintaining a residence for drug use, according to detectives.

At 8 p.m. on Monday, authorities recognized a sleeping man in a driveway at an undisclosed location in Lakeland as the suspect.

Police said he had stolen a car from an acquaintance after the alleged shooting and had driven it to a driveway.

The victim was last listed in critical condition, according to law enforcement officials.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Clyde Davis faces the following charges:

  • Attempted second degree murder
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Possession of a short-barreled shotgun
  • Possession of ammunition by a convicted felon
  • Grand theft of a motor vehicle
  • Burglary of a conveyance.

Due to Marsy's Law, the Polk County Sheriff's Office will not release the name of the victim.
