Being a sports guy enthusiast doesn't mean I know everything about all sports. Sometimes I do get tripped up, like this one. Wiffle Ball was all explained to me by more knowledgeable experts, from New Jersey.
Wiffle ball was invented by David N. Mullamy of Fairfield, Connecticut in 1953 when he designed a ball that curved easily for his 12-year old son. Who referred to a strike as a "whiff" , thence the name.
The ball is about the same as a regulation baseball, but is hollow plastic no more than 1/8th of an inch thick. The game became popular Wiffle Ball, to be played in backyards, sand lots and picnic games in the 1960s to 1979. Since 1980 the game exploded as an "organized" sport, with many leagues and tournaments played across the United States and as far away as Spain.

These competitions have been known to draw dozens of teams or more, typically consisting of two to five players per team, varying rules and field dimensions. The tournaments are usually for money, so they then attract the wrong players, of course.
There is the National Wiffleball League Association and some 26 leagues with varied objectives. Here are a few photo to share and excellent Video of some on all surfaces... grass, graound and yes, even some at open time on the local Comminity Tennis Courts. Yes, I said tennis courts.
