Bill Aims to Ban Smoking With Kids in the Car

Motorists would face fines under a proposal filed in the Florida Senate Wednesday.

Parents who light up with their kids in the car may soon face penalties if state Sen. Jeff Clemens gets his way.

The Lake Worth Democrat filed a bill Wednesday that would make it illegal to smoke in a vehicle with a child under the age of 13 present. The subsequent ticket would count as a nonmoving violation, according to the bill. The bill specifies penalties under the state’s current nonmoving violation fee structure, which currently cost about $30 a pop, according to the state.

While it is unclear if action will be taken on Clemens’ bill, if it is approved by the Senate and House, the lawl would go into effect on Oct. 1 of this year.
