Are You Rockin'?

Are your marketing actions and activities geared toward real revenue generation or are they just keeping you rockin' busy?

When I spent a few weeks of the summer with my grandparents who owned a large dairy farm in Vermont, one of my favorite things to do was to sit in my Grandma’s rocking chair and watch her make breakfast while I rocked away.  She was busy as she cooked breakfast for a hungry crowd that came in from morning chores. I rocked and talked with her as she cooked a breakfast of homemade sausage, potatoes and gravy, toast from homemade bread, lots of butter and jam – yum!

I remembered those summer days when I had a recent opportunity to enjoy the comfort of a rocking chair. The rocking action takes energy but you don’t get anywhere. That got me thinking about business and how many small business owners with whom I interact are very busy…rocking with great energy but they aren’t getting anywhere or aren’t getting to their desired destination.

The three main contributing factors for this are:

  • No real plan of action for growing the business.
  • Marketing activities are stale and not really measured for results.
  • Ideas for business growth are talked about but never implemented.

It is so easy to get caught up in the daily rocking activities, isn’t it? We look busy and it feels like lots of action taking place. When you ask the really tough questions about how much revenue is generated by this or that activity, the answer isn’t always what we’d like to hear.
