Your Camera Can Help You See Better

Using your camera can help you to better see and enjoy the world around you.

“There are none so blind as those who will not see.” This proverb has been traced back in English to 1546 (John Heywood), and resembles Jeremiah.5:21 (King James version): “Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not.”

Famous Great Depression photographer Dorthea Lange said, “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” After learning to capture images with your camera, you will begin to better see and appreciate the world – nature, art,  patterns of light, people, insects, and all the beauty of nature.

Another version of this is: “When I have a camera in my hand, I look at things differently. I see details and beauty in natural and manmade objects that I wouldn’t otherwise give a second glance.” Hearing comments like this is one of my greatest pleasures in working with developing (no pun intended) photographers.

On a photo excursion, I am always looking for beauty in nature, unusual combinations of color and light, and beauty in the mundane. I see and appreciate the world we live in more even when I don’t have a camera with me – although I do frequently regret not taking my own advice to always have a camera handy. Enthusiasm for the captured moments of beauty, art, and inspiration are all results of having the eye for photos.

If you would like to learn more about digital photography and share ideas with other photo enthusiasts, there is still time to join our Thursday night classes at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center. Call 813-929-1229 or email info@con2000.com for more information.
