Dr's In: Protests are important and sway politicians.

Protests sway politicians.  Protesting groups have more power than lobbying dollars for they represent blocks of votes.  Recent marches in Florida, Texas and other states condemn the violence spurred by “Stand Your Ground Laws. More and bigger peaceful marches should follow. 

Both Zimmerman and Martin are victims of such policy; Martin because he tragically lost his life and Zimmerman due to continued condemnation.  He may face more charges. Verdict aside, attention to Zimmerman will continue.  He will remain a pariah in fear throughout his life from those who seek retribution. 

Attention to Martin’s death will find Zimmerman reviled and despised.  Continued punishment, justified or not, will continue. I am sure if Zimmerman could relive the incident’s fatal night, he might have chosen pepper spray over a lethal gun.  Security guards wherever they serve should learn from this tragedy.  There are many alternatives to guns for protection. I trust trained law enforcement to carry guns and use proper judgment.

I hope the protests continue until efforts are made to take a hard look at the negative aspects of the “Stand your ground Law.”  We need to take steps to curtail the violence so much a part of American life.  Stand Your Ground Laws should go!
