After a two year battle with Republican conservatives then President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law, July 30, 1965. Medicare assured seniors would have health care. Prior to that many low income seniors died and were destitute due to lack of health care and poverty.
FDR had similar problems with Conservatives of both parties implementing government work programs which helped end the depression and lead to America’s greatest years of prosperity. He also had critics that still claim today that Social Security should be dismantled. Again hard core Conservatives led the charge in the thirties, the 50s and 60s and are now pulling all stops to destroy ObamaCare.
With all the bleating about government spending, historically the Republicans have been the biggest spenders. How so many American people can still believe the bellicose from Conservative Republicans staggers the imagination? I should add that for many years (not today) I was a registered Republican. Due to their distortions and misinformation leading us into Iraq, I left the party.

ObamaCare like Medicare frightens conservatives. They survived the backlash from their efforts to sandbag Medicare and feel they can survive the backlash from standing firm against ObamaCare. They should be a bit nervous this time. Their greatest fear with all their negative misrepresentation is that ObamaCare will succeed and allow millions of uninsured Americans to have decent access to health care. It is happening.
The exchanges just opened and there are glitches but there are also successes. People are coming out to sign up and get their insurance. When a very identifiable group of Conservatives stood against FDR work programs, Social Security, and now ObamaCare; it’s time for all Americans to get the message. With friends like these, who needs enemies?
