Elderly Man's Song to Dying Wife Goes Viral

The 93-year-old Florida woman was serenaded at her hospice beside by her husband of 73 years.


An elderly Florida couple’s timeless love is capturing the hearts and minds of millions of YouTube viewers.

In the video, a frail Howard Serena, 92, signs “You’ll Never Know,” by Rosemary Clooney and Harry James to his wife of 73 years. Laura, 93, was in hospice care at the time the video was filmed, not expected to live out the week, her granddaughter Erin Solari posted on YouTube.

“I was lucky enough to capture this precious, heart-melting moment between the two of them,” Erin explained in the post.

“You’ll Never Know” is the couple’s song. Laura listened to it for comfort while Howard was away fighting in World War II, Solari wrote. The two even sang it as a duet when they renewed their vows in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.

“This is what true and genuine love looks like,” wrote a YouTuber on the post.

Since Solari posted the video Sept. 20, it has received more than 3 million views. She reports her grandmother has rallied somewhat and has been able to leave hospice to live out her remaining days at home with family.

“Our family along with the wonderful people form hospice are taking care of her and making sure she remains as pain-free and comfortable as possible,” she wrote.

Laura and Howard have nine children and 18 grandchildren, ABC News reported. Laura suffers from macular degeneration and dementia. Howard is nearly deaf. The Serenas are from Gainesville.

After being told the video had gone viral, Laura reportedly said: “I told you Howard that I’d make you famous.”
