Florida May Gain Congressional Seat: Report

The 2020 U.S. Census may give the Sunshine State a little more power in Washington, D.C.

Florida is among several southern states anticipated to see their number of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives rise once the 2020 census is completed.

If the numbers hold strong, Florida will see its seats climb from 27 to 28, according to Carolina Demography at UNC-Chapel Hill. That organization noted in a recently released report that Virginia may also gain an additional seat in the House while Texas is anticipated to gain two and North Carolina one.

Reapportionment after the 2020 census is anticipated to “shift political power South and West,” the report states. Continued population shifts to the south and west from the Midwest and northeast are cited for the projections.

While Florida and a few southern states will see their seats rise, states like New York, Minnesota, Michigan and Pennsylvania are likely to face losses, Carolina Demography noted.
