Gators Track Heading Into SAC Tournament

The Sunshine Athletic Conference will host athletes and schools from all over Pasco County.

It will be a tough meet. The Sunshine Athletic Conference Tournament is bigger than even districts and regionals. It falls well short of earlier this year, but that’s just why Land O’ Lakes has some athletes that could dominate at this tournament.

It begins with senior Nicole Woodard. Nicole placed third in long jump and fifth in high jump at the Steinbrenner Invitational. Look for her to be at the top of both events this Friday.

Sophomore Samantha Austin should place in the top five if not the top three in the 400m. She finished 15th at the Steinbrenner Invitational with a time of 1:01 minutes. If she improves that time at the SAC Tournament, she should finish at the top of the field.

Freshman Hallie Grimes ran a 26:23 second 200m at the Steinbrenner Invitational. However, Wesley Chapel’s Ravin Gilbert ran a 25:56 and will likely be the biggest challenge for Grimes.

The girls relay teams are very good also. Keep an eye on them, especially the 4x100m team.

Another hopeful to keep an eye on is Ian Mckenzie in pole vault.

Junior Chris Wilkinson needs to improve on his 54:02 second time in the 400m if he wants to finish with points at the SAC meet.

Senior Hendrix LaFontant stands a chance in the 1600m (mile). He will have to shave a few seconds off of his 4:49 minute Steinbrenner time.

Freshman Travis Nichols could score points in 3200m (2 mile) if he can wittle some time off his 10:06 minute Steinbrenner time.

The SAC should be a fantastic event and accurate barometer for districts coming up in a couple weeks. It will be held at Mitchell High School, 2323 Little Rd., in Trinity at 1 p.m. April 8.
