National Doughnut Day 2015: Where to Get Freebies

The annual 'holiday' takes place June 5 and is being observed by eateries throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Tampa Bay area residents with a taste for celebrating National Doughnut Day this Friday will find that a number of eateries throughout the region are taking part in the festivities.

The annual celebration got its start back in 1938 when the Chicago Salvation Army kicked it off to honor women who served up doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The sweet holiday stuck and has since become an annual tradition, generally celebrated on the first Friday in June, Dunkin’ Donuts explained in a media release about its participation in the event.

This year, participating Dunkin’ Donuts stores will offer a free doughnut to any customer who makes a beverage purchase. The offer, however, is available only while supplies last.

Krispy Kreme is also taking part in the festivities. That chain’s offer is available only while supplies last, but doesn’t require a beverage purchase to redeem.

Both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts have stores throughout the Tampa Bay area. It’s best to check with the closest establishment on availability before heading out the door to cash in on National Doughnut Day sweetness.
