Pasco Sheriff Backing Tougher Sex Offender Rules

The law would make it illegal for convicted offenders to live within 2,500 feet of locations children frequent.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has announced his intentions to support Commissioner Mike Moore’s efforts to tighten local laws regarding sexual offenders.

Nocco said he intends to join Moore Monday morning as he proposes a new ordinance that would make it illegal for certain offenders to live within 2,500 feet of schools, daycare centers or playgrounds. State law sets the limit at 1,000 feet.

Moore and Nocco plan to reveal more details about the proposal during a Monday presentation at the sheriff’s office’s Wiregrass Substation, 38239 Paseo Drive. That presentation is set to take place at 11:30 a.m.

The proposed ordinance is patterned after those already in place in Miami-Dade and Lake counties.

“There are a total 872 registered offenders in Pasco County,” an email from the sheriff’s office stated. “Of those, 775 are registered offenders, 92 are considered sexual predators, and 5 are juvenile offenders.”
