A Tampa man's car was struck in the wreck at Melrose Avenue and Old Lakeland Highway.
A 75-year-old Tampa man escaped injury in a Wednesday morning train-versus-car crash in Zephyrhills.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Clayton Zwak was traveling westbound on Melrose Avenue in a 2011 Cadillac around 9:48 a.m. As Zwak approached the double rail road tracks at Old Lakeland Highway, a CSX service truck was preparing to service one set of tracks.
Zwak, the patrol said, stopped on the other set of tracks where a northbound train was approaching. The train’s impending arrival caused the crossing arms to lower onto the Cadillac, a highway patrol report stated. The car remained on the tracks as the three-engine, 79-car train passed by, striking the Cadillac’s front end.
