Saint Leo Professor Offers Tips To Defeat Holiday Stress
From finances to family gathering, the holiday season can increase stress, says Dr. Carletta Perry.

SAINT LEO, FL β For many people, the joyous holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. For others, the holiday season turns into the βThe Twelve Pains of Christmas.β
Whether itβs the hustle and bustle of packed shopping malls and schedules or finding a present thatβs βjust rightβ can cause holiday stress. Thereβs also the added stress of a contentious election season which may cause some people to worry about family gatherings turning into family arguments.
Dr. Carletta Perry, assistant professor of psychology at Saint Leo University, offered some hints for dealing with the stress of the 2016 holiday season.

The joy of the holiday is in the spirit of how people prepare and celebrate, Perry said. Rather than scrambling for the perfect gift or busting a budget, βknow that love and time are the most valuable gifts you can give,β she said.
Perry also said to not overdo it during the holidays.

βStarting with yourself, love you enough to value your time,β she said. βLet others help you and value what others can offer. They will feel valued, and you wonβt be left feeling exhausted and resentful.β
For many, family is often the origin of our pain but it is also the origin of healing, Perry said.
βDonβt miss out on spending time with the ones you love,β she said. βBe thankful for the ones who are present and honor those who are no longer present.β
For successfully making it through family gatherings during the holidays, Perry recommended to show up with a positive attitude and a plan.
βFor example, take an old video to show, share pictures or look up relatives and friends on Facebook to share in their experiences,β she said.
Rather than considering Christmas or Hanukkah to be a humbug, Perry said to get in the spirit by enjoying every βto-doβ item, planning for the special days or cooking a special dish.
βCelebrate by being a part in the wonderful time of the year,β she said.
