Sunlake Teacher Goes to Court

Ashley Landes is taking part in the Florida Supreme Court's Justice Teaching Institute this month.

Getting a summons from the Florida Supreme Court isn’t necessarily good news.

That’s not the case for Ashley Landes, a first-year government and economics teacher at Sunlake High School. Rather than having to testify in a case, Landes gets to meet with justices for a hands-on training session that will arm her with knowledge to bring back to her students, according to a media release from Pasco County schools.

The learning session runs April 7-11 and is sponsored by Florida’s highest court. During the five-day program, teachers get to take part in sessions with Supreme Court Justices and other judges. Some of the things they’ll be doing include running trial simulations, giving mock oral arguments, looking at case studies and more.

The goal: “to learn techniques and strategies for teaching legal concepts and processes to students in a meaningful way,” according to the release.

Landes’ hope is to be able to give “her students to a deeper concept understanding by relating to the current justice system in Florida.”
