Tampa Bicyclist Killed In State Road 54 Crash

LUTZ, FL — A 54-year-old Tampa man is dead following a crash on State Road 54 Saturday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Paul Joseph Mast, 38, of Land O’ Lakes was heading westbound on State Road 54 around 7:40 a.m. As Mast’s vehicle passed east of Carpenters Run, a bicycle ridden by Franklin K. Williams was heading westbound on the roadway’s edge.

Mast’s Nissan Juke “overtook and passed another vehicle,” a highway patrol report said. When it did, however, the vehicle struck the bicyclist, the report noted.

Williams suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation with charges pending. No further information is being released at this time.
