Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She lost her vision and hearing when she was 19 months old due to an unknown illness. Thanks to her teacher, Anne Sullivan, she learned to express herself and was able to attend school. She was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. It was the first comprehensive civil rights law addressing the needs of people with disabilities, prohibiting discrimination in employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunications.

These events are open to the public—please plan to attend in celebration of these historic anniversaries. RSVP is appreciated but not mandatory. If you have questions about these events or need information about services, please call LVIB at (727) 815-0303 and DHHSF at (727) 853-1010 or visit our respective websites at www.lvib.org or www.deafhhsfla.org.
