In 2012, I attended a Yoga Journal Conference in New York City. Yoga Journal is the most popular yoga magazine on the market today. I dont buy it because it's too spiritual and weird, but nonetheless Yogi's everywhere buy it and some even aspire to look cover perfect in classes around the country doing perfect poses in perfect clothes being the perfect size. Yep I pretty much think it's the perfectness that I detest as I love when people are messy and relish being imperfect. I'm messy and very imperfect and I have lots of friends who are that way too. Sorry I dont have any perfect friends as they arent very fun to hang out with and really hate FPY and me too. It's ok though because we are selective about who we let unroll a mat at FPY. Its why people love it at FPY. We have fun, crazy, messy, imperfect, slightly weird, and uniquely interesting, people that walk through our doors. I love these people! And they are all ages, body sizes, both genders, and come with different past injuries or bodies that havent done much or bodies that are in premo shape. It doesnt matter, it just matters that they show up and are real whatever real is for them. Opps got way off track there. Reel it in Girl! Anyways, the publisher of the magazine was giving an outstanding talk on a survey that Yoga Journal ran in 2012. His name was Bill Harper. Here was a very interesting statistic from his survey: There are 311 million people in the US. Of those 311 million people, only 45 million do some form of exercise weekly that's 14.4% of the population or out of 100 people there are only 14 people getting their butts off the couch to take care of their ONE and ONLY BODY that has to move them from place to place, has to let it reach high and bend over low, has to sit for long periods at work, has to run kids from point A to B, has to make dinner, has to clean the house, house to take care of the yard, has to take care of their spouse, has to etc.... Ahhh.. no wonder we get caught in a vicious cycle. I have spent several years in that cycle. Ok more than several years. Pretty much my late 20's to late 30's. These were years where I was run down, overweight, had terrible acne, looked ten years beyond my biological age and really wanted nothing to do with anything except that coach at 9 pm. This meant give me a pint of Ben & Jerry's and hubby "Not Tonight." We have to do lot and can find many excuses to be one of the 85.6 people that say, "I'm to tired to exercise." I had a ton of excuses! So then we slowly break down. Our bodies feel the aging process, we begin to gain weight, we begin to become more sedimentary when we don't have to do something. It's a crazy vicious cycle. How do we break it? A great yoga teacher, Debbie Williamson, once told me in a training session that a huge shift can happen in our lives if we change one word to another word. Ready? Here it is! The word change is from "Have to" to Get to". I swear this works for everything! Try it out. "I have to mow the grass today. Ugh!!" The words "Have to" just suck energy from you. Now lets play with shifting the paradigm. "I get to mow the grass today because I have energy, I am alive, I have legs, I own my home, I love the smell of cut grass." The words "Get To" allow you to be grateful for whatever reason and everyone knows that being grateful gives you energy to feel alive. Ophra Windrey had a whole segment on having a Gratitude Journal not so long ago. Gratitude is a huge Attitude elevator that lets us go as high as we are willing to go. So do you have to exercise to take care of your one and only body? Nope. You can let the nagging thought that you know your should steal energy from you. You can let your body feel like you have to drag it from place to place. You can say I cant because my kids schedules are so busy and then be wiped out at the end of the day. All these are choices. or you can say, "I get to exercise today. I get to move my body. I get to feel like I'm Limitless. I get to have more energy to play with my kids. I get to feel good. I get to live life to its fullest. I get to move body parts because I have them. I get to be a role model for my kids to be fit and healthy because they see me exercising. I get to have a better sex life because I feel great and have high energy levels. I get to have more lift in my butt because I use my butt to support my weight in actions. I get to have better skin that looks younger because I am eliminating toxins through sweating. I get to SWEAT because I GET TO SWEAT AT FPY!" Here's the best GET. I "GET TO GO TO FLORIDA POWER YOGA" for one hour three to four times a week because Denice and Christie McClure GET To do what they love...teaching people how to move their bodies powerfully on a yoga mat so that they move powerfully off the yoga mat. And you Get To unroll a mat with your entire family from 4yrs old to college kids in a World Class Yoga Studio where the environment is not like any other environment out there. We have lots of people drive from all over Tampa area to practice for a reason. We deliver the best possible yoga experience on the mat! It's are mission because we take your hour to "GET TO" very seriously. See you on the mats!
