Pinellas County Animal Services Needs Teen Volunteers

Pinellas County Animal Services is seeking responsible teen volunteers to help leader volunteers with dog walking. Teens must be between the ages of 16 and 18 and must commit to 12 hours per week at the shelter. The eight-week program will begin on Monday, June 10, and end on Friday, Aug. 16.

Pinellas County Animal Services Teen Program is designed to prepare teens in the community for future leadership roles, create a sense of motivation and teach invaluable skills that will enable teens to grow into responsible young adults. By working at the shelter, teens will be prepared for the work force, gain hands-on experience and earn community service hours for graduation.

Students can download an online application at the Pinellas County Animal Services website at www.pinellascounty.org/animalservices/volunteer.htm or complete the application at the Pinellas County Animal Services shelter located at 12450 Ulmerton Road in Largo. Applications must be received by Saturday, April 13. Space in the program is limited.

Orientation training is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, and dog walking training with a lead volunteer is scheduled for Wednesday, May 29. The program requires a commitment of 12 hours per week for three days a week. Morning and afternoon four-hour shifts are available Monday through Friday. Saturday shifts are available in the mornings only as the shelter closes early.

Pinellas County Animal Services is located at 12450 Ulmerton Road in Largo. Normal hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the adoption center closing at 4:40 p.m. Rabies vaccinations are administered on Thursdays between 1 and 4 p.m. Special Saturday hours to reclaim a lost pet or to drop off a pet are 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Starting April 1, the shelter’s hours of operation will be Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the adoption center closing at 5:30 p.m. Saturday’s hours will be expanded to 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and services will include adoptions. The facility is closed Sunday and holidays.
