Laughter is a Healing Power for Caregivers

Laughter for caregivers is like jogging on the inside!

Laughter is a Healing Power for Caregivers

By:Linda Burhans

Laughter is more important today than ever before. Many times it can be difficult
to let yourself laugh when facing a loved one's struggles or some struggles
of your own.

When caring for my mother there were times she was violently ill.  As my heart was wobbling, I would clean my mama up,  make her a shake of ice cream and Ensure and put on an "I Love Lucy" tape. We would laugh so hard sometimes there were tears in our eyes.  I know that lightening up the mood was beneficial for both of us.

Another thing I did at the time was to start a Joy Journal.  I started by writing
down things that made me smile.  Shortly after that, I started writing down
the small victories I had made when caring for my mama. By keeping a written
record of the things that bring you happiness during the week, you will naturally
become more aware of them. You will find yourself looking for joyful things to write about.

I would also encourage you to share stories with your loved ones.  Ask your family and friends about what is going in their lives that makes them laugh and share your own stories with them.  When we share stories with each other we always have more to laugh about.

Another suggestion, is to take a moment to step outside of your situation and purposely look for a different, humorous perspective.  The more you practice this,
the easier it will become  to look for reasons to laugh instead of getting caught
up in negativity.

As caregivers, many times we are consumed by guilt, fear, hopelessness and perhaps even helplessness.  But don't forget, so are the loved ones we are caring
for.  We ALL need a laugh!  If you look for a laugh, you will find it.

If you feel that your caregiving is becoming overwhelming or if you just need rest
from that  daily stress, be sure to seek the support you need.
