Pinellas County Animal Services is a place to learn about pet adoptions, volunteering, responsible pet ownership and more!

Pinellas County Animal Services serves people too!  You can visit our website for information about adoptions and all the other things we do:  WWW.pinellascounty.org/animalservices.

You can even watch a frequently updated video of our adoption animals on our website.

Currently, adoptions are $40 with some being a little less because they have been with us a long time.  Pictured here is Roman who has been reduced to $25. Roman is what we call an old timer because he has been with us for a long time.  He was signed in as a stray found in St Petersburg back on January 2nd, 2013.  American Pit Bull Terriers and mixes are frequent visitors to shelters around the country.  The main reasons they become homeless are simple.  The first reason is that they are very energetic. People don't realize until after their puppy has become an adult that there is not enough time in the day to have a family, a job, and a dog that needs to play for an hour twice a day.  The second reason in Pinellas County is that apartments, mobile home parks, and condos don't allow certain breeds.  Insurance companies regularly tell complexes that they will not be insured if they allow this breed or several others.  Other properties just don't allow large dogs.  This is sad as this breed is very loyal and intelligent albeit high energy.  There would be far fewer American Pit Bull Terriers in shelters if there were an easier way to insure a property with a stereotyped breed.  In a future blog, I'll discuss some of the stereotypes associated with different breeds.
