The German American Society celebrates 60 years in Pinellas County this year and once again presents an authentic representation of the world's largest and most-famous Oktoberfest, held annually in Munich, Germany.
Here’s how the organization describes the festivities:
“Walk through the doors of the Oktoberfest Village and be transported to a world of family fun, good times and good cheer. A place where there are no strangers and authentic German food and German beer are served by friendly staff some wearing traditional German tracht. Link arms, schunkle and join your newly found Oktoberfest friends in the singing of Ein Prosit, or hit the dance floor and polka the night away!”

The fun begins with fanfare, a Parade of Flags, and a ceremonial Keg Taping by the Burgermeister. The celebration includes live bands and dancing, Oompah music, performances by Bavarian folk dancers, a children’s Kinder Korner, and a nightly beer-stein-holding contest called “Masskrugstemmen” (a well-known competitive Bavarian sport).
Don’t forget the food! In addition to beer, the menu includes bratwurst (pork), knockwurst (beef), weisswurst (pork & veal), leberkase (veal loaf), schweinsbraten (roast pork), schnitzel (fried pork cutlet), sauerkraut, red cabbage, potato salad, spaetzle (German noodles), German potato pancakes, pommes frites (French fries), apfel pfannekuchen (German apple pancake), Black Forest cake, apple strudel, rosettes, and Bavarian pretzels.
