Florida Woman Gives Away $43 Million Lotto Jackpot

The 90-year-old Largo resident reportedly didn't want the win to change her life.

LARGO, FL — Six lucky numbers made a 90-year-old Largo woman one of Florida’s newest millionaires, but the status just wasn’t meant to last.

Rather than keep proceeds from her $43 million Florida Lotto win, Ruby Sorah decided to give it all away, several media outlets have reported. The woman, whose husband is also 90, said the two didn’t want the money to change their lives. That doesn’t mean, however, they don’t want the cash to help change the lives of those they love. They reportedly opted to give the winnings to family rather than keep it for themselves.

According to the Florida Lottery, Ruby picked all six numbers in the Feb. 17 $43 million jackpot drawing. She claimed her prize earlier this week and opted to take the winnings in a one-time, lump-sum payment that came out to just over $31 million.

Sorah purchased her jackpot lottery ticket at Winn-Dixie, 8740 Park Blvd., in Seminole. The retailer earned a commission of $100,000 for making the sale. The drawing also resulted in more than $44 million in proceeds generated for Florida’s Educational Enhancement Trust Fund, the lottery reported.

Sorah isn’t the only Pinellas County resident to claim a major Florida Lottery prize in recent weeks. St. Petersburg’s Phyllis Turner, 57, also recently won the $1 million prize in the $10,000,000 Florida Cash scratch-off game. Turner also opted for a one-time, lump-sum payment. In her case, the winnings added up to $775,918.80, the lottery reported. She purchased her ticket from the Gulfport Mini Mart, 1615 58th St. S.

The state also had 13 residents win millions in January’s record-breaking $1.58 billion drawing.
