A personalized journey into achieving your existing creative potentialThis 5-week journey of discovery of everyone’s potential for creating a solid body of photography work based upon a single concept is at the core of this intensive seminar. The topics explored will revolve around ideas and concepts, intent, intended outcomes, genres, techniques and their individual applications to a specific project. The review of images on a weekly basis will serve to emphasize the unity of each individual project, explorations of personal aesthetics, composition principles, post-production techniques and presentation principles, including artist statements. Other topics will also address the creative principles behind any body of work, the many genres of photographic expressions as well as creative blocks suffered by all artists and the solutions to move beyond these.Participants should bring images in 300dpi jpg formats on a jump drive or cd for the first lecture, and be expected to produce images for the following segments, with a final assembly of photographs in a unified format at the end of the seminar.

Sound compositional practices are essential for all visual artists, yet many struggle to recognize and objectively analyze the myriads of possibilities afforded to them. From passive or active framing, the role of lines, perspective, vantage points, leveled or sharpened images, balance, economy, rhythm or unity. Emphasis in a visual image can be achieved through contrast, color, isolation, and placement or centering to name but a few, including flatness or the dislocation of planes. The role of color does play an essential part of compositional techniques, but the psychology and balance of colors can often be ignored through assumption rather than knowledge and technique. These factors will affect the intrinsic value of any visual imagery, including the subconsciously acquired knowledge of these compositional rules that will make the difference between a good visual image and an exceptional one.
This 3 week intensive workshop will use extensive PowerPoint presentations and discussions on the possibilities and application of compositional techniques. Sample images are included in these presentations in order to convey a visual message that reinforces each principle. This workshop is applicable to artists at all levels and was created for a Fine Art Master’s level of instruction, but with a view to simplify these principles in simple terms. Although based on the photography medium, these compositional principles are applicable to all visual artists, photographers, painters, mixed media artists and so on. This workshop is an exclusive presentation in Florida as a joint venture of Menaul Art and Pierre Dutertre. It is priced at a level commensurate with our common vision of supporting and educating the local art community.
