ICYMI: Florida Drivers Pay Less Starting Sept. 1

The average motorist will see annual registration fees drop by $25 a year.

Tampa Bay motorists who need to renew their tags are in for a surprise when they visit their local tax collector’s office. The cost is going down by about $25 for a typical vehicle.

The reduction in registration fees, which takes effect Sept. 1, was signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott back in April.

The bill rolls back tax increases that were put into place in 2009. The annual savings, according to a media release issued by the state, add up to about $400 million for motorists.

The legislation was part of Scott’s “It’s Your Money Tax Cut Budget” plan that was intended to put $500 million back in the wallets of Florida taxpayers.

“The Florida House was proud to make lowering fees for Florida drivers a priority this session,” House Speaker Will Weatherford was quoted back in April as saying. “ Governor Scott has been a leader on keeping taxes low for Florida’s families and I thank him for signing one of our top priorities into law today.”

The new lower registration fees are valid for renewals that are set for Sept. 1 going forward.
