The Volunteer in Policing program is recruiting for fall 2011. Here’s what you need to know if you’re interested in joining.

Q: Who can apply?

A: Men, women, retirees from diverse careers and seasonal residents are welcome to apply. You must be over the age of 21 to apply.

Q: What qualifications are needed?

A: To be a VIP you must:

  • be courteous and professional
  • good team player
  • physically able to perform duties
  • have a clean driving record
  • pass a criminal background check
  • be 21 years of age or older

Q: Is training provided?

A: Yes. Training is provided by Largo Police Department. VIP training is mandatory for those who want to participate in a patrol position. The VIP Training Academy has 66 hours of classroom instruction and field training with an active volunteer. Participants also get certified for traffic control.

Q: How does being a volunteer officer work in terms of schedule and time commitment?

A: Volunteers work in support of the sworn law enforcement officers, which means they are on call to serve 24/7. Both support and patrol positions are offered as volunteer opportunities.
