Man Shot While Breaking Into Largo Home, According To Police

Police said Jeffrey Smith is in stable but critical condition after being shot while kicking in the door of a home.

LARGO, FL — Largo police are investigating the shooting of a man accused of forcing his way into a home early Wednesday morning.

At 6:21 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found 29-year-old Jeffrey Smith with a gunshot wound, according to the Largo Police Department.

The resident told police that Smith tried to force his way through the front door as it was being opened by the resident. When he entered the home, the resident said he was paranoid and acting erratically.

The resident became frightened and ran outside to get help at a neighbor's house. The resident told police that Smith followed and kicked in the door of the neighbor's home, and the neighbor shot him, according to Largo police.

Smith is in critical condition at a local hospital. Largo police said alcohol or drugs appear to be responsible for his erratic behavior.

He's been charged with two counts of burglary of an occupied dwelling.
