Deputies Spread Holiday Cheer to Families
The Christmas Sharing Project provided food, clothes, toys and bicycles to about 500 children.
Commuters may have seen festive bicycles strapped to the bumpers of cruisers Thursday afternoon. The deputies transported 77 bikes and Christmas packages to families in need around Pinellas County.
The Christmas Sharing Project started in 1993 as a way for victim advocates to help people over the holidays. The project raised $40,000 this year to help buy food, toys, and clothes for the families.
"The Christmas Sharing Project is an extremely positive program. (Some) families would not have Christmas without it. We are seeing more needs than wants this year. Families requested clothes and hygiene products," .

Local businesses helped the sheriff's office by donating the bikes. The Bechtel family of Bechtel Financial and Amscot came and helped load up the bikes. Six-year-old Jake Bechtel shared his enthusiasm for the project with the deputies.
"I can't wait until everyone gets their bikes...so they can have a good holiday cheer on (the bike)," Jake Bechtel said.

In a separate bike and toy drive Friday morning, the Pinellas County Health and Human Services Department received 56 new bicycles and other toys. In its 25th year, Pinellas County employees donate money throughout the year for the holiday gifts. The presents go to eligible families who receive benefits from the health and human services department.
