Three Pets Found on a Sun Porch after the Owners Moved Out

An alert apartment manager let authorities know about three animals apparently left behind on a sun porch, after the residents had moved out of the complex.

The manager's actions may have saved the life of the dog, although the rabbits did not survive the Florida heat, according to the SPCA Tampa Bay in Largo.

When  Humane Officer Jill Purl went to investigate on June 14 she found two deceased rabbits and a "thin" dachshund at the Boot Ranch West Apartment Complex in Palm Harbor. The animals were alone on the hot porch without evidence of food or water, according to the SPCA.

The rabbits succumbed to "high heat conditions and starvation," according to a necropsy performed by the SPCA.

The 8-year-old dachshund fared better although she was "thin" and showed a lack of “general care.” The dog continues to receive medical care at the SPCA.

The animals’ owner, Renee Alexandra Williams, was found and arrested on animal cruelty charges on June 14. The 20-year-old Odessa woman was released on a $5,500 surety bond on June 15.

Williams agreed to surrender the three animals to the SPCA on June 19.

The dog, Coco Chanel, is doing fine. She is not yet available for adoption but the SPCA is accepting applications from people who are interested in adopting her.

The SPCA Tampa Bay reminds everyone that animals and children perish in the Florida summer heat.

"Please do not leave your helpless family members in cars or areas that provide no protection from the sun," according to a news release.
