Watercraft Hit Warning Sign in Fatal Crash

Victor Vasquez was thrown from the personal watercraft and knocked unconscious when the driver, 34-year-old Robert Turnbull, hit a "Slow" sign.

A water scooter that crashed Saturday night killing an Indian Rocks Beach man struck a warning sign in the Intracoastal Waterway north of the Belleair Causeway, authorities said yesterday (March 12).

The Tampa Bay Times reports that 40-year-old Victor Vasquez was thrown from the personal watercraft and knocked unconscious when the driver, 34-year-old Robert Turnbull, crashed into a "Slow" sign.

The pair were riding the personal water scooter at about 8:30 p.m., which is after dark and prohibited under Florida law, according to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Turnbull pulled Vasquez from the water and tried to revive him on the shore, investigators said. He also tried to administer CPR at their home, at 2507 Bay Boulevard, Indian Rocks Beach. Turnbull summoned authorities.

Turnbull found Vazquez unconscious after the crash and headed to shore. Efforts to revive him along the way, and again at their home at 2507 Bay Boulevard, failed. Rescue crews also couldn't revive Vazquez.
