Whiz Kid: Maxine Fahy Edible Gardener Extraordinaire

First-grader Maxine Fahy has adopted her parents' love of gardening. She volunteers at Fuguitt Elementary to care for its garden of edible plants.

Accomplishment: Maxine Fahy, first grader at  volunteers at the school's garden and helps to care for its edible plants.

Keys to Awesomeness: Maxine is a smart and determined young girl. She has followed in her parents' footsteps of . Her father owns a local business in this special landscaping, which features all types of edible plants. Their front yard is filled with flora that's fit to eat. Their garden has plants like lettuce and banana trees.

 Maxine volunteers in nurturing the garden at her school. Her mother, Cindi Hetz, visits to plant seeds, tend to weeds and enrich the soil with coffee grounds.

 Maxine is also working on building her own nursery at home. She wants to turn half of her tree fort into a nursery with edible plants.

Her family also raises their own chickens for eggs.  Maxine says their chickens' eggs "taste better" than those from the grocery stores. She has a favorite chicken, named Stripey.

 Maxine's career plans are to be a scientist.
