It's Flower Time!

Plan your garden before you shop for plants to achieve maximum results.

After an endless barrage of very late cold fronts, it looks like the Bay Area is finally clear to begin our spring planting season.

The wise gardeners have taken advantage of the downtime to weed, mulch and prune in preparation for any flowery new additions to the garden. The rest of us will buy what catches our eye and attempt to make space as our beautiful new purchases wither in the sun, begging us to hurry with the cleanup!

Being prepared is the key to avoiding too many impulse purchases resulting from the extended winter season. Being an organized gardener will help avoid many headaches throughout any project.

Before purchasing, take a photo or two of the target area and make a sketch with a few accurate measurements. It also helps to have a list of favorite, as well as not favorite, plants to help guide the selection process. Taking a quick photo of any desirable plant or garden for future reference saves the need of knowing the name of every bush and tree. Bring this information to a knowledgeable garden center and allow them to make suggestions to help achieve the desired goal.

Taking these few steps in advance will help ensure success.
