Lutz Tree Nominated as a Florida Champion Tree
A Live Oak that is 95 feet tall with a 218 inch trunk in Lutz has been nominated as a Florida Champion tree.

On March 15, 2013 at 3:30 PM, the Florida Forest Service will be measuring a Live Oak in the Windemere Subdivision to verify it is a viable candidate as a Florida Champion Tree. The tree is 95 feet tall, with a crown of 92 to 100 feet and a circumference of 218 inches.
“Champion Tree Program was created by the American Forests organization in 1940, to recognize the largest known tree of each species in the United States. . . . Florida now has the most national champions of any state. . . . . Florida began keeping a state register, the Florida Champion Tree Register, in 1975 to recognize the largest tree of each species within this state.”
The tree is located on the creek right of way between 18304 and 18306 Swan Lake Drive in the Windemere Subdivision, in Lutz (off Sunset between Livingston and Hanna Avenues)
Lori Moreda, a Certified Arborist of the Hillsborough County Development Services Department first measured and nominated this tree to be a Florida Champion tree. Charles Marcus of the Florida Forest Service will be conducting the verification measurements
I wonder if there other trees in the Lutz area that might be Champions that have yet to be discovered.
