MIAMI, FL — More than a ton of cocaine worth about $32.2 million was seized in international waters near Florida, according to a U.S. Coast Guard news release.

The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvel seized more than 2,450 pounds of cocaine in two separate cases in the Caribbean Sea and offloaded the illegal drugs Tuesday in Miami.

Six suspected smugglers were also taken into custody and will face prosecution in federal courts, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon, Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless and the Joint Interagency Task Force South in Key West assisted with the cases.

“Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Coast Guard crews and agency partners involved with this interdiction, Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell brought these suspected smugglers and illicit contraband ashore for prosecution," Lt. Cmdr. Colin Weaver, commanding officer, said. "Coast Guard crews continue to deliver on our important missions of homeland and maritime security to save lives and thwart transnational criminal organizations operating in the Caribbean.”
