2 Swimmers Rescued Near Haulover Inlet

The swimmers were snorkeling along the beach when they got caught in the current.

MIAMI, FL — Two swimmers had to be rescued on Friday afternoon when they got caught up in the tide at Haulover Inlet. The incident occurred at 4:20 p.m. Neither swimmer was injured.

"The two swimmers were snorkeling just to the north of Haulover Inlet along the beach when the strong incoming tide swept them around the rocky jetty and into the turbulent inlet," Erika Benitez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told Patch. Miami Beach police pulled a 42-year-old drowning victim from the ocean on Thursday night. The man was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.

"After the couple were swept into the inlet and were exhausted from fighting the strong current that was sweeping them towards the bridge, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Ocean Rescue team dove into the water, swimming into the current to reach the couple," Benitez said of Friday's incident. "Once reached by the rescuers, the exhausted couple were given 'rescue buoys' for flotation and pulled to safety by the Ocean Rescue lifeguards."

She cautioned that swimmers may encounter strong tidal currents near coastal inlet even when the water appears calm.
