Weather forecast:
1. ‘Taken way too soon.' Killer of beloved Miami Northwestern athlete is sentenced (miamiherald.com) — A Miami-Dade judge has sentenced 18-year-old Jahara Malik to 17 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of Miami Northwestern Senior High football player Yahkeim Lollar, followed by five years of probation. The emotional Miami courtroom hearing drew grieving family, classmates, and friends, and detailed how the Little Haiti garage incident and its aftermath have shaken a tight-knit local community.
2. Miami-Dade School Board to vote on closing or repurposing 9 schools (nbcmiami.com) — Miami-Dade County Public Schools is weighing a plan next month to close or repurpose nine schools because of steep enrollment declines, including at Parkway and Rainbow Park. Families worry about longer commutes, school transitions, and losing neighborhood campuses, while board members argue consolidation could expand course offerings and create new 6–12 academies like the proposed Miami Springs campus.
3. Miami-Dade commissioners trim some bus routes that have low ridership (miamiherald.com) — Miami-Dade commissioners just approved cuts and reductions to several bus routes, including eliminating Route 132 between Hialeah Market Station and downtown Doral because of very low ridership. Other routes serving the airport, Douglas Road, FIU, and nearby neighborhoods will now run less frequently, as the county reshapes its “Better Bus Network” and debates how to fund more service.
4. Former Panthers TE Greg Olsen selected as a commencement speaker at University of Miami (qcnews.com) — University of Miami graduates will hear from former Hurricanes and NFL tight end Greg Olsen during commencement ceremonies running May 7–11 in Coral Gables. Olsen, now a FOX NFL analyst and award‑winning broadcaster, returns to his alma mater alongside several other notable speakers to address students from multiple UM colleges, including engineering, nursing, and business.
