BREVARD COUNTY, FL — A 20-year-old Palm Bay woman was killed Sunday night in a three-vehicle crash involving an alligator on Interstate 95 in Brevard County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
A 58-year-old Canadian man was driving a Mercedes-Benz E-350 south in the highway's center lane at mile marker 214 when he spotted an alligator in the road and wasn't able to avoid it just before midnight, FHP said.
As he hit the gator, the victim, who was driving a pick-up truck right behind him, swerved to miss him and lost control of her vehicle.
Her truck overturned and she was thrown from it, landing in the center lane.
An unknown vehicle traveling south on I-95 hit the woman on the ground and fled, FHP said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver who hit the gator remained at the scene with troopers.
Anyone with information is asked to contact FHP at *347 or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
