For thousands of Florida students, the difference between a failing grade and a ‘lightbulb moment’ isn’t a lack of effort. It’s the inability to see the chalkboard. Data (2024-25) from the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired’s Heiken Children’s Vision Program in Florida reveals a profound reality: vision care is a cornerstone of education. By bringing primary eye health directly to Title I schools using four state-of-the-art mobile eye clinics directly to school campuses, the program eliminates the transportation and financial barriers that often prevent Florida’s most vulnerable children from receiving essential care.
This past school year, the Heiken Program was a lifeline for families across the state. Our mobile eye clinics and provider networks reached deep into the community to bridge the gap in pediatric eye care.
- 16,494 low-income schoolchildren received comprehensive dilated eye exams.
- 66% of those students required and received prescription glasses at no cost to their parents.
- 1,195 students were identified with more serious ocular conditions and received necessary medical referrals.
- 2,558 schools requested our services, demonstrating the high demand for mobile vision care.
The statistics tell only part of the story. The real impact is seen in the classroom. According to our research funded by the Health Foundation of South Florida, nearly 80% of parents reported that their child’s school performance improved significantly after receiving services from the Heiken Program.
When a child can see clearly, their confidence soars and their engagement increases. This is felt daily by educators like Quenetta Dixon, a nurse at Dunbar High School in Lee County: “I watched as students walked away excited and smiling to now be able to see the world in a whole new light… The vision service that [the Heiken Program] offers to qualifying families of students in need is immeasurable!”
Despite visiting 326 unique locations and conducting hundreds of clinic days, the demand for vision care continues to outpace available resources. Last year alone, Miami Lighthouse received over 30,600 referrals. Due to capacity limits, there is still a critical, unmet need: 14,159 children who applied for help could not be served. This unmet need represents thousands of students across Florida who are currently sitting in classrooms struggling to read, learn, and reach their full potential simply because they lack a pair of prescription glasses.
The program’s success relies on a highly efficient model that maximizes every dollar to serve as many students as possible. By coordinating 431 separate visits to schools this past year, our team ensured that even schools with high volumes of students were fully served. This collaborative effort between Miami Lighthouse and participating optometrists, local school districts, and the Florida Department of Health is a proven model for improving educational outcomes through direct health intervention.
As Rigobert Merisier, a local Miami-Dade County school leader, noted, “Access to vision care is essential to students’ academic success, confidence, and overall quality of life… [this] helped remove a significant barrier for many of our families.”
The Heiken Program is more than a health initiative. It is an investment in Florida’s future workforce and leaders. By removing the physical barrier of poor vision, we are ensuring that every child, regardless of their family’s financial situation, has an equal opportunity to graduate and succeed.
