The <a href="https://www.lymphoma.org/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Lymphoma Research Foundation</a> invited the community to tee up for a better tomorrow at the <a href="http://www.lymphoma.org/FloridaGolf" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Third Annual South Florida Golf Invitational</a> on Monday, May 4, 2026. Supporters putted for a purpose at the iconic La Gorce Country Club, one of the most exclusive private golf clubs in the United States, designed by Jack Nicklaus, while being a catalyst in finding cures. The exclusive tournament highlighted the Foundation&rsquo;s strong donor base with a unique, intimate experience for the 72 participants. 

The event raised $575,000 to support the Lymphoma Research Foundation&rsquo;s mission to realize the promise of science to eradicate lymphoma and serve the community touched by this disease. Proceeds will power breakthroughs in research that cure blood cancers and directly support cancer patients in need. Lymphoma is the most common blood cancer in adults and the third most common cancer overall among children. The Lymphoma Research Foundation is the nation&rsquo;s largest nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to funding lymphoma research and supporting the lymphoma community through evidence-based education, support services and resources. 

The annual event kicked off with breakfast, while players warmed up on the driving range. The shamble-style tournament commenced with a shotgun start. Golfers enjoyed lunch, an open bar, and two-hole-in-one challenges to win a Cadillac Escalade generously donated by Murgado Automotive Group and a prize of $50,000 generously donated by Outsmart Labs. After the final hole was played, players gathered in the La Gorce clubhouse for a networking cocktail reception and enjoyed passed hors d&rsquo;oeuvres and the event&rsquo;s signature cocktail, &ldquo;Drive to a Cure.&rdquo; The evening continued with an awards ceremony and an impressive culinary spread, including fresh sushi, a carving station, assorted pastries and a build-your-own sundae station. Every five minutes, someone in the United States is diagnosed with lymphoma, and more than one million people in the country are living with, or in remission from, lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

The Animal-assisted Therapy program is anchored by Wrigley, a one-year-old Boston Terrier certified therapy dog and marks a new chapter in the facility's approach to whole-child care at the only freestanding sub-acute pediatric skilled nursing facility in the Southeast United States.
CompCare, located in Pompano Beach, is a 36-bed, freestanding, pediatric skilled nursing facility that serves children and young adults from birth to 21 years old who have medically complex conditions and are medically stable. The newly renovated 15-bed nursery serves newborns to eight-year-olds.
The Animal Assisted Therapy program grew from an idea by CEO Marjorie Evans and CompCare Director of Nursing Meghan Nesom, MS, BSN, RN, who recognized the profound impact Wrigley's informal visits had on residents, especially an eight-year-old boy named Sam. Wrigley is the pet of Nesom, who would frequently bring him to visit the children. Once she realized the human-animal bond helped improve the children&rsquo;s wellbeing and quality of life, Evans encouraged Wrigley&rsquo;s formal certification as a therapy dog. 
Sam arrived at BCC&rsquo;s CompCare after a terrible car accident changed everything. Sam was left with a spinal cord injury that took away his ability to move his arms and legs and breathe on his own. What followed were months in a pediatric intensive care unit, where machines hummed constantly and days blurred together. When he was finally stable, he moved to rehab, only to return to the ICU again for complications. By the time he was cleared for long-term pediatric care, Sam had learned something no child should learn so young: how to protect himself by shutting the world out. 
In 2025, Sam was flown from Texas to BCC&rsquo;s CompCare. He arrived with a small collection of belongings and a heart that had quietly decided not to hope too much. The BCC staff was ready to welcome him and help him heal and grow into this new version of life, but Sam was not ready. He was quiet, withdrawn, and his answer to almost everything was a simple, automatic &ldquo;no.&rdquo; That was until the day he met Wrigley.
Now, Sam is not the quiet, guarded boy who arrived with &ldquo;no&rdquo; as his shield but a child full of humor, preference, curiosity, and joy. 
Nesom now manages BCC&rsquo;s Animal-Assisted Therapy program and personally funded all of Wrigley's training. Wrigley officially joined the program in January 2026, after completing his training as an AKC Canine Good Citizen, having been trained and tested through a private dog therapy company. He visits the facility three to five days per week , and all visitations are supervised. Wrigley is current on all vaccinations and receives regular veterinary care. His parents were temperament tested prior to breeding.
BCC&rsquo;s mission centers on maximizing the potential of every child in its care, and the animal-assisted therapy program reflects that commitment in action. Animal-assisted therapy addresses emotional support, anxiety reduction and trauma recovery, needs that are especially acute among CompCare's medically complex population. Dogs offer something clinical interventions alone cannot: unconditional acceptance. Wrigley does not distinguish between a child in a wheelchair and one who is developmentally delayed. He simply offers love, and that nonjudgmental presence has proven transformative for residents. 
Animal-assisted therapy contributes to individuals&rsquo; well-being, supporting physical health and improving cognitive, emotional-affective, and social aspects, leading to enhanced emotional well-being, reduced anxiety, and decreased stress levels.

American Heritage Schools Celebrates Class of 2026 for Acceptances to the Nation's Top Universities

In the ongoing fight against drunk driving and drugged driving, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Southeast Florida hosted its 15th Annual UKG &amp; Salah Foundation Hero&rsquo;s Pride Move with MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K Presented by the Florida Panthers &amp; the Sheriff&rsquo;s Foundation of Broward County on April 26, 2026. 
Founder and Honorary Chairperson Heather Geronemus founded Move With MADD and MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K after her late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009. In commemoration of its 15th anniversary, the annual event debuted its rebrand as Move With MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K, reflecting expanded momentum in the fight against impaired driving and deepened community engagement. 
Thousands of walkers, runners, strollers, adaptive athletes, dogs and supporters of all ages came together in downtown Fort Lauderdale to take steps to raise awareness and funds to end impaired driving for good. The event surpassed its fundraising goal, generating more than $260,000 to save lives and support victims of drunk driving. The proceeds benefit MADD Southeast Florida&rsquo;s community education, victim support services and youth prevention programs. Every dollar donated remains in South Florida to provide victim services and prevention education at no cost. 
Attendees enjoyed a morning full of festivities, including children&rsquo;s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances and vendor and educational booths. The morning began with former NFL Cheerleader Bella Denton singing the National Anthem. LFT Lab and Roar Station&rsquo;s Alex Piccirilli, a Nike trainer featured on Netflix&rsquo;s &ldquo;Kickstart Fitness with the Basics,&rdquo; led a fun and engaging warmup before runners and walkers hit the starting line. WTVJ-NBC 6&rsquo;s Community Reporter Miriam Tapia, alongside Emcee Doug Esquire, kept the vibes high and the crowd hyped from start to finish.

At the event, Commissioner Udine presented Geronemus with a proclamation declaring April 26 Move With MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale Day in Broward County. At a City of Fort Lauderdale Commission meeting before the event, City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis and Vice Mayor Sorensen, alongside the Fort Lauderdale Police Department&rsquo;s DUI Task Force also presented a proclamation to MADD Southeast Florida, declaring April 26 Move With MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale Day in the city. 
In honor of the 15th anniversary, the MADD team presented Geronemus with a meaningful bracelet engraved with her guiding motto, &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t give back, just give,&rdquo; a simple yet powerful reflection of her enduring generosity and the spirit she has inspired in others.
&ldquo;When I started this event in 2011, after losing my father, Dr. Robert Geronemus, to a drunk driver, I made a promise that I would do everything in my power to help prevent another family from experiencing that kind of loss,&rdquo; said Geronemus. &ldquo;What began as grief became action. Series in their historic sanctuary in Downtown Miami. These concerts will feature music performed by soloists from Orchestra Miami along with the finest singers in South Florida.
The series, performed on Saturdays at 7 PM, will explore the lush and opulent music of the Art Nouveau era (roughly 1885 to the 1930's). This period is known for its opulence, lushness and eclecticism- music that was often theatrical, grandly scaled, and adorned with complex harmonies.
Our exploration of the Art Nouveau era begins in Italy, where we discover stile floreale, or "floral style" music. The music of this era pushed boundaries and created a lush sound as it expanded the musical ideals of the early 1900's.
The program includes Il Tramonto, a breathtaking and dramatic lyric poem/cantata composed by Ottorino Respighi for string quartet and mezzo-soprano, Respighi’s gorgeous, rarely heard Piano Quintet in F Minor. The program also explores some of the lesser-known works of one of Italy’s most famous composers, Giacomo Puccini, Crisantemi for string quartet and some of his art songs. Lastly the program ends with some of Italy’s sunniest works, canzoni Napoltane by Giorgio Tosti.
The performers include some of Orchestra Miami’s finest musicians- Huifang Chen and Dale Sandvold on the violin, Gregory Falkenstein on the viola and Susan Bergeron on cello- along with Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi on the piano. Also featured are special guests Metropolitan Opera Grand Finalist Award winner, mezzo-soprano Maggie Reneé and frequent Orchestra Miami collaborator, tenor Gerardo Ortega.
Admission is on a Pay-What-You-Wish basis starting at just $5, or you can reserve a front row seat for just $30! You are invited to join a wine and bubbly reception with the artists following the performance.

The Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami (CCBM) under the artistic direction of Eriberto Jimenez, will present Le Corsaire Suite. This enchanting ballet is based on Lord Byron’s epic poem written in 1814, a romantic story of pirates, maidens, slave merchants, and pashas.

The first performance of Le Corsaire as a ballet was in 1837 at the King's Theatre in London, with choreography by François Albert and music by Nicholas Bochsa. In 1858, Jules Perrot adapted the story again, adding several new dances later on choreographer Marius Petipa created several versions between 1863 and 1899.
