Off-Duty Officer’s Gun Accidentally Discharges At FL Sushi Restaurant

An off-duty Miami-Dade police officer's gun accidentally discharged while he was eating at a South Florida sushi restaurant, reports said.

CORAL GABLES, FL — An off-duty Miami-Dade County police officer’s gun accidentally discharged while he was eating at a Coral Gables sushi restaurant, according to multiple reports.

The three-year law enforcement veteran’s gun went off unexpectedly while he was eating at Sushi Maki Tuesday night, the Miami Herald reported.

The bullet struck another diner at his table, NBC Miami said. The victim was brought to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The customer was treated at the restaurant by Coral Gables Police Department and Coral Gables Fire Rescue before they were brought to the hospital, Local 10 News reported.

“We responded to a call of an accidental discharge of a firearm inside Sushi Maki and our officers responded,” Sgt. Alex Escobar with the Coral Gables Police Department told WSVN. “All I can tell you is it involves an off-duty officer. I don’t know which agency it is at this time and one of them or someone was transported to the hospital.”

The incident is being investigated by Coral Gables police and Miami-Dade police’s Internal Affairs Bureau.
