Founding Mayor of Doral Returned in Special Election
Voters oust incumbent Luigi Boria.

DORAL, FL — Voters elected a familiar face to be the city's new mayor on Tuesday as they swept former Mayor Juan Carlos “JC” Bermudez back into office by nearly a two-to-one margin during a special runoff election.
With 100 percent of the vote counted, Bermudez bested incumbent Luigi Boria by a margin of 4,680 to 2,347.
In a separate vote to decide councilmember seat one, Claudia Mariaca beat Adriana Moyano by a margin of 3,787 to 2,937, according to the Miami-Dade County Elections Department.

Bermudez was Doral’s first elected Mayor in 2003 and served for more than nine years.
In announcing his current mayoral bid, Bermudez said he was “very disappointed in what has happened to our beautiful city.”

He pledged to create an open and transparent government and return the city to a place “where the residents and its government work hand in hand to make our community the best possible place to live, work, play and learn.”
Of the 22,664 registered voters in Doral, about 32 percent — or 7,044 people — voted during Tuesday’s special election.
