Giancarlo Stanton Named National League MVP
Stanton is the first player in Marlins history to win the coveted honor.

MIAMI, FL — Home run king Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins finished the 2017 season one swing short of 60 home runs, but he managed to clinch the National League's Most Valuable Player Award on Thursday with two votes left to spare. Meanwhile, new team owner Derek Jeter confirmed he has yet to sit down with Stanton since taking over in October. Stanton is the first player in Marlins history to win the sport's highest individual honor.
The slugger beat out Cincinnati's Joey Votto by two points in the MVP balloting, according to MLB.com.
Stanton racked up more homes runs and RBI than any other hitter in all of Major League Baseball during the 2017 season with 59 and 132 respectively.

Jeter told reporters on Wednesday that he hasn't had a reason to call Stanton and he has multiple options to rebuild the team that don't involve trading his superstar.
"You try to look at ways to improve your organization. That may be through minor league system. It may be through trades," Jeter said "It may be through developing your own, but we're open to discussions just like everyone else."

Jeter added that he will call Stanton when the time is right.
"If there's a reason to call, I'll call him, but at this point there's no reason to call him," Jeter said.
Stanton's 13-year, $325 million contract in November 2014 was the largest in all of sports when it was signed.
