Hacker Steals Identities Of FL Condo Collapse Victims: Report

A hacker has stolen the identities of Surfside condo collapse victims, reports said. Officials are urging loved ones to check their credit.

SURFSIDE, FL — As recovery efforts wind down at the site of the partial condo collapse in Surfside, officials said hackers are stealing the identities of those who died when the building came down.

As of Thursday evening, 90 of the 97 victims pulled from the devastation at the site of the former Champlain Towers South condominium have been identified, while eight people remained unaccounted for in the disaster.

As victims are identified, their names have been made public by Miami-Dade police and local officials. A hacker who has seen the victims’ names in the news has been stealing their identities, Local 10 News reported.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said victims’ families should check their credit reports.

“(They) violated the rights of an individual, but worse than that, a deceased individual and a family that is grieving,” he said.
