Kids Spot 10-Foot Burmese Python Near School

Venon One was called in to wrangle the large snake.

HOMESTEAD — Children discovered a 10-f00t Burmese Python on Monday afternoon not far from a school.

"According to witnesses, the snake had been spotted earlier sunbathing near a school by a couple of kids that were walking by," explained Erika Benitez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. " The proximity to a school is definitely a concern."

The critter was wrangled by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Venom One Unit, which was advised that a large snake had been observed near the former Homestead Golf Course at Keys Gate, 2500 E West Palm Dr.

Fellow first responders didn't put up any objection to letting the reptile unit take over the call.

"When Venom One unit arrived, other responders who had arrived just a few minutes before, pointed to a large brush area where the snake was last seen," Benitez explained.

Without hesitation, Lt. Scott Mullin of Venom One quickly retrieved the critter. It measured 10 feet six inches in length.

"Burmese pythons, famous invaders of the Florida Everglades, although pose little threat to humans, they can take down animals as large as alligators and deer," added Benitez.

The snake was to be turned over to biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists.
